With the NBA Finals tied at 2 games apiece, a lot of folks have asked me if I’m pulling out my Cleveland Fan hair after the game 4 defeat. Pffft, a loss like that is child’s play for a Cleveland Fan – at least they didn’t lose in a last second, never before seen, Tyson punch to the solar plexus fashion. Besides, today is Mortal Lock Friday, so I get to tell you what’ll happen next! [Read more…]

2015 NHL Stanley Cup Final: It’s A Cup Thing

By Joe Hines

There is a pair of major league playoff final series beginning this week. The NBA on Thursday night, and in my opinion, the best of all playoffs, the NHL on Wednesday night between the upstart Tampa Bay Lightning, and the greatest franchise in sports, the Chicago Blackhawks. You may have just detected a slight Chicago bias, and you would be right. I’m unabashed. Chicago all the way.

I’m fully aware that hockey is fourth in the pantheon of “Big 4” sports. It’s a niche sport, they say. I don’t know the rules, they say. To this I say, do yourself a favor. Learn a few of the basic rules. Icing, offsides, line changes. And be advised, there are not quarters in a hockey game. There are three 20-minute periods in a regulation hockey game. And as the Blackhawks can attest, if the game isn’t settled in regulation, overtime is required to settle the score. Sometimes three. And if it does go to overtime, the Hawks ALWAYS win. It’s been an interesting week, hasn’t it, friends and pretend acquaintances? We’ve had fallout from the NFL Draft, fallout from the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, and thanks to Tom Brady we’ve had more ball jokes tweeted than anywhere on Earth outside of a Ron Jeremy roast. It all makes you excited to see what the sports world will bring us next, and that’s where Mortal Lock Friday comes in. [Read more…]

Bulls, Blackhawks Playoff Hopes Suffer Crippling Blows

By Joe Hines
PSDC Staff & Chicago Guru

In Chicago, Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2015, was the sports equivalent of the day the music died. The best players on each of the windy city’s winter/spring sports teams, the Bulls and Blackhawks went down with sudden, likely season-ending injuries.

Derrick Rose, the Chicago Bulls point guard and hometown hero, suffered yet another knee injury, a torn medial meniscus to his right knee, the same injury that sidelined him for all but 10 games of the 2013-2014 NBA season. It is Rose’s third major knee injury since his MVP season in 2011, and here in the Chicago area the buzz is not so much whether he can return to MVP form or not, but whether he can even return to the court. They Didn’t Tell Me it Would Be Like This!

Withdrawal. Most commonly associated with the detoxification process after addiction to drugs has taken over your life. Or perhaps it’s just a semi-effective birth control measure. Regardless, I’ve been suffering through them this past week with the end of the NHL and NBA playoff seasons.

No more Blackhawks until October. Eleventh to be exact, at the United Center against the Sabres. The Hawks will be the favorites to win the Stanley Cup next season, despite the LA Kings cheating to “win” it this year. [Read more…]

Blackhawks Remain Alive in Western Conference Finals

By Joe Hines
PSDC Staffer & Chicago Guru

Sunday night on the sports docket will feature what I consider to be the greatest spectacle in sports. The seventh game of an NHL playoff series. But then I’ve never seen a World Series. #damncubs

Consider this, the Chicago Blackhawks, once on the wrong end of a 3-1 deficit in the series against the LA Kings, have come back to tie the series following a thrilling double overtime win on Wednesday in Chicago, and Friday night in that hockey hotbed, Los Angeles.

Here’s The Thing – The Vegas Comfort Zone

I’m Stephen Thomas with Here’s The Thing.

I’m off to Vegas this week, performing at Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club in the MGM through Sunday.  Now, I’m only in the opening spot this week, so as much as I want you there, maybe think a minute before you take out a second mortgage so you can afford to come out to Sin City, attend all of my shows and make little campsites around Vegas for you and the rest of the Stephen-Heads. Against All Odds: Fourth Edition

By Keith Alrick
PSDC Writer

The Against All Odds pot took a hit in the first two weeks. After those learning experiences, I finally had a positive week. The pot grew a whopping 44 cents. It would have been a much larger victory if the Avalanche hadn’t blown their 3-2 series lead against the Wild. I guess that’s what I get for betting on Patrick Roy. This is a huge weekend of sports. Not only do we get the NBA and NHL playoffs but there is also the Kentucky Derby and a Mayweather fight. In other words, the Against All Odds pot will look very different next week. Let’s hope the change is in the right direction.

Last Week’s Results: +$0.44
Current Balance: $192.99

I have to start with the Kentucky Derby. Who doesn’t like to bet on the Derby? I once predicted the winner three consecutive years. The only problem is I was in middle school and had no money on them. California Chrome is the favorite at nearly 2/1. I would stay away from that. Not enough return for correctly picking the winner of a 19 horse race. It should be noted that I make my picks purely off of the horse’s name and if I’ve heard of the jockey. With that said, here are my Kentucky Derby picks. [Read more…]

Against All Odds: Third Edition

By Keith Alrick
PSDC Writer

They say it’s not a mistake if you learn from it. The first week I picked nothing but golf props and the stash took a big hit. Last week I spread my picks out among several sports and only took a small loss. Some might say the real lesson is to not bet on anything but that’s not happening. It’s time for some more Against All Odds.

Last Week’s Results: -$1.45
Current Balance: $192.55 ($24 still pending)

$5 on Golden State +3: After losing by 40 points in Game 2, most people don’t have much confidence in the Warriors but I think they win this game outright. I’ll happily take the three points just in case.

$4 on the Anaheim Ducks +1.5 (+170): I think the Ducks will come out on fire after losing two straight in Dallas. [Read more…]

Here’s The Thing – The NFL Is King Of The Baldwin Brothers

By Stephen Thomas
PSDC Funnyman and Brad Pitt Doppelgänger

I’m Stephen Thomas with Here’s The Thing.

The NBA Playoffs are in full swing this week, with upset talk and endless timeouts and 16 teams convinced that no one on Earth respects them. The NHL Playoffs are also in full swing this week, with upset talk and no handshaking and 16 teams convinced that he with the most teeth loses.  It’s the most exciting time of year for both sports, yet one of the most discussed events of the day on sports social media is the release of the NFL schedule.
