Chester Bennington and the Top 10 Linkin Park Songs

By Darreck Kirby

On July 20, 2017, Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington was found dead of suicide in his home. Only 41 years old, Bennington’s death shocked the music world and serves as just another reminder that depression holds no prejudices as to who it torments. It’s said time and again but if you’re going through something and you feel like you might not make it through, reach out. And if you know someone going through something like this, don’t necessarily wait for that person to reach out first. Take the initiative and make sure they’re doing all right. If not, you could find yourself one day where Chester’s friends and family are now.

Intrugal to Linkin Park’s success, Chester’s vocals propelled the Nu Metal/Rock band to historic heights: at least eight of the band’s singles sold a million copies; Meteora saw five straight singles top the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks Chart.

To pay tribute to Chester, we’ve decided to rank the Top 10 Linkin Park songs.

10. Points of Authority

This one is honestly a personal favorite more than a common addition within Linkin Park Top 10 lists. But, as it was my first sampling of the band’s sound, it nevertheless holds a special place for me.

This track would go on to see renewed interest when it became part of the Collision Course collaborative EP with Jay Z and was remixed with 99 Problems.

9. Bleed it Out

This track is a quite literal representation of the band’s perfectionist tendencies and gave Shinoda a chance to shine with his rap lyrics. This is ever more evident in the opening line: “Here we go for the hundredth time, hand grenade pins in every line. Throw ’em up and let something shine. Going out of the fucking mind.” Though a bit on the short-side, this track is surprisingly catchy and serves as a rock-clap anthem.

8. Breaking the Habit

The final song on Meteora, Breaking the Habit began delves deep into themes like addiction and depression. Adding to the uniqueness of this track is the anime-styled music video accompanying it. This track may have started off as an instrumental titled ‘Drawing,’ by Mike Shinoda, but grew into a lasting track that embodies the band’s sound and writing.

7. New Divide

Many perhaps know this song for being the anthem of Transformers 2. But honestly, this song stands apart from that mess. Between its heavy synth sound and melodious lyrics, it mixes alternative rock with industrial to provide an ultra-modern sound. This led to the song simultaneously topping the US Rock Songs, Modern Rock Tracks, and Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks charts. To date it is one of the band’s most well-received tracks.

6. What I’ve Done

Back with Transformers again? Well, at least this one is tied to the passable original and not a sequel. Notably absent from this track is Shinoda’s vocals, but that simply allows him to shine elsewhere. The first single on Minutes to Midnight, What I’ve Done features a raw guitar and debuted in the Billboard Top 100’s Top 10.

5. Faint

One of the band’s most recognizable tracks, Faint utilizes a sped up guitar and samples from their earlier tracks to create a gem. Bennington’s screams and growls mixed with his soft spoken lines ensured he and the band wouldn’t be ignored.

4. Somewhere I Belong

Finding one’s place in the world can be a long, scary struggle. Some never find it. Others struggle to remain there. Meteora’s first single, this track features elements of rap-rock, nu metal, and alternative rock and is trademark Linkin Park. The balance between Bennington’s vocals and Shinoda’s rapping helped the song not only chart within the Billboard Top 40, but worldwide as well.

3. Numb

Blending melody with aggression, Bennington explores the struggle of living up to someone else’s expectations despite putting forth your best effort. “Don’t know what you’re expecting of me, put under the pressure of walking in your shoes. Every step that I take is another mistake to you.”

In the end, the message behind this track is to stay true to yourself, even if that means “failing” in someone else’s eyes.

2. Crawling

This track netted Linkin Park its first Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance and held a particularly special place in Bennington’s heart as it relates to his own personal demons. Said Bennington to Spin, “It’s about feeling like I had no control over myself in terms of drugs and alcohol. This is just who I am, this is what I write about, what I do, and most of my work has been a reflection of what I’ve been going through in one way or another.”

Since then, Bennington has added that the song is “probably the most literal song lyrically… that’s about feeling like I had no control over myself…” He went on to say that anguish and addiction were a creative force for him.

1. In the End

The song that made Linkin Park a force to be reckoned with, In the End mixes a melodic tune with angst-fueled lyrics and Shinoda’s smooth rapping. This may not have been the band’s first hit but it’s certainly the one that solidified their place on the rock scene.

Intentionally left open ended, the lyrics could be appended to any number of situations, making it ever-relatable to fans. The song would go on to become the band’s second-highest charting single.

Chester Bennington was just 41 years old at the time of his passing. In radio interviews, he’d admitted that being alone in his own head had long since been a bad place to be.  To combat this, he’d actively focused all of his energy on being a better husband, father, and bandmate. Unfortunately, Chester couldn’t overcome his demons.
