The 30K Club has a new member and his name is Dirk Nowitzki. Coming into Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers, the Tall Baller from the G needed just 20 points to become just the sixth player in NBA history to score 30,000 points. He wasted little time doing so.
Scoring Dallas’s first 8 points and 14 of the Mavs’ first 21, the Ghost-faced Drilla sent the home crowd into a frenzy with every bucket. Going 6 for 6 as Dallas built a double-digit lead, the moment arrived less than one minute into the second quarter.
Finding himself in a familiar spot isolated on the baseline, Dirk backed down his man and then turned to fade as only he can. Nothing but the bottom of the net. The roof exploded off the AAC, drowning out the broadcasters’ voices as they cheered along with the sold out arena. But the action didn’t stop there.
The Lakers, wanting to play spoiler, raced down the court for a quick bucket, only to come up short. The resulting possession saw Dirk drain another 3 from the top of the arc, sending the raucous crowd to dizzying heights.
The Members of the 30K Club:
At the rate he’s going, Dirk may very well catch Wilt Chamberlain for 5th on the NBA’s All-Time scoring list, although he may actually maintain that 6 spot thanks to Lebron James’s charge into the record books. Regardless, Dirk is a living legend who will complete his 20th and final season next year, making him only the second player in NBA history to play 20 seasons for a single team (Kobe Bryant). Congratulations to Dirk. It’s been a privilege to watch and cover you over the years.
