Johnny Manziel Kicked Out of Manning Passing Academy

Johnny Manziel is no stranger to publicity, whether good or bad, and unfortunately for him he is once again in the public spotlight after doing something dumb. AGAIN!

According to a report on, Johnny Football was kicked out of the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, LA this weekend. Manziel was to report to Nicholls State University campus in the morning for meetings and drills, but he did not show up until noon. Archie Manning pulled Manziel to the side and spoke with him briefly before sending him home.

The Manning Passing Academy released a statement that Manziel went home because he was sick. I guess Archie was trying to cover for him and not put him another bad mark on Manziel’s name, but when you are out on the town in New Orleans, and you are the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, you tend to be noticed. Manziel was also spotted out on the town in College Station, TX Saturday evening after supposedly being too ill to stay at the Manning Passing Academy.

Manziel is still just a college kid, and college kids make mistakes, but there has to come a point where he gets serious about football or his NFL career will be very short. It’s one thing to be tweeting out pictures of yourself at a casino with a wad of cash, which is something a college kid from a wealthy background might do, but getting drunk and staying out all night when you have a chance to learn football from the first family of quarterbacking is a whole different story. Yes, college kids get drunk and stay out late, but he had a chance to showcase his talents versus other top college quarterbacks and he gave that opportunity away to party.

There is a lot of leniency given to athletes and celebrities when it comes to the responsibility of acting right, but at some point if you are wanting to make a living playing a game, you need to get your ish together. We saw this last season with Tyrann “Honey Badger” Mathieu. He had too much fun partying and being the face of the SEC in the offseason and preseason, but when he failed yet another drug test, he was dismissed from LSU and fell in the NFL Draft from a possible top 15 pick all the way to the 69th pick.

Mathieu’s troubles are different from Manziel in that Mathieu was breaking the law, but Manziel has continued to show a repetitive track record of stupidity. He was almost kicked out of Texas A&M before last season. He has tweeted how he can’t wait to get out of College Station because he got a parking ticket. There was a picture online of his Heisman Trophy with a joint. He has been reprimanded by Texas A&M and told to stay low-profile, but he has time and again put himself in the spotlight, and it has nothing to do with his talents on the football field.

ESPN NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper has Manziel as the 25th best prospect heading into next season, that’s borderline first round, but with the amount of money that NFL teams have to guarantee to first-rounders, and with the legal trouble NFL players seem to always have, do we really expect a team to take a risk on Manziel? So many quarterbacks have great college careers that never pan out in the NFL (Ryan Leaf, Matt Leinart, David Carr, Danny Wuerfell, etc.) why would a team put faith in a kid that isn’t a top-flight prospect and can’t seem to keep himself out of the news?

Many have thought that Johnny Football was a flash in the pan, and more likely to become Johnny Canadian Football after leaving college, but it appears that Manziel’s flash might burn out well before making his pro debut.
