I enjoy the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, AKA March Madness, as much as the next guy. I dutifully fill out brackets and watch them go up in flames along with 99 percent of the rest of the population midway through the first day of the tourney. Here in Northern Illinois, there isn’t much of a regional interest since, for the second straight year, no team from the state made the tournament. The University of Wisconsin is only about 60 miles from where I sit now, and most of my basketball-loving friends have adopted the Badgers as they wind their way through the West Region as a No. 1 seed. Here in my hometown of Rockford, we root for Wichita St. because the Shockers excellent guard, Fred Van Vleet went to high school here. [Read more…]

Weekly Wrap: College Hoops

I keep telling myself that each passing week can’t be as crazy as the last in the world of college hoops, yet here we are on another Monday, still not believing just how crazy the last week of basketball was.  Consider that since last Monday, No. 1 (Indiana), No. 2 (Florida), No. 3 (Michigan), No. 5 (Kansas), No. 7 (Arizona) and No. 10 (Ohio State) have all lost.  The Jayhawks lost twice last week and haven’t won a game since January including losing to TCU in what some are saying is the biggest upset in college basketball in over 20 years.

TCU pulled the upset of the year when they stunned fifth ranked Kansas

As one can see, it was a difficult week to be a ranked team.  Six teams inside the top 10 and 13 ranked teams in total were upset over the course of the past week.  As exciting as it makes the regular season, just wait until March Madness this year.  Without a dominant team and parity at an all-time high, as many as 20 or so teams could legitimately cut down the nets come April in Atlanta. Weekend Wrap: College Hoops

The first full weekend of conference play wrapped up with the last two undefeated teams falling.  First it was No. 1 Duke who fell to NC State in Raleigh on Saturday behind a tremendous performance from the Wolfpack front line of C.J. Leslie and Richard Howell.  Leslie poured in a game-high 25 points while Howell had a career day, grabbing 18 rebounds to go along with 16 points in the Wolfpack’s 84-76 win over the Blue Devils.
