WTF Weekly: Ronda Rousey Does Not Lose

By Jay Cox

If you like and watch UFC and boxing like I do, you have seen this and wondered what in the hell Cat Zingano was thinking Saturday night when she took on Ronda Rousey. If you do not watch UFC and other brands of fighting, I will give you a quick rundown. [Read more…]

WTF Weekly: NFL and LA

By Jay Cox
PSDC Writer

The NFL and LA go together about as well as the lady screaming “but I love him” and her drunk husband on a good episode of Cops. The love is there and so is the passion but it just can’t work without someone getting assaulted. If you didn’t hear this past week in an extremely odd press release the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders released a joint statement saying if improvements weren’t made in the near future to their playing facilities, they would move to LA together and build a stadium. Here are a few reasons that just won’t work.

The most obvious is what brings our WTF for this week. It is the awful artist’s rendition of what the stadium would look like. I mean look at this thing.

I mean it looks like a cruise ship. It literally looks like I am about to climb aboard the Carnival, grab a $7 beer and head to the casino because I forgot my damn suit for the captain’s dinner. Come on, guys. Do you really want that to your left as you are making your way out of south LA? Be honest folks, it just ain’t that pretty. [Read more…]

WTF Weekly: Kanye West

By Jay Cox
PSDC Writer

To give all you wonderful readers a little behind the scenes look into how my brain works I don’t go looking for things to bitch about in this post. I watch enough TV and live sporting events that I generally see something once or twice a day that does not involve great decision making. When I do, I make a small note somewhere (back of napkin, post-it-note, under the sleeve on my arm) literally anywhere that I can refer back to when I make it to my laptop to brainstorm. So this was a little bit of a slow week. I had a few ideas but I want to give you the best. This is your weekly serving of filet mignon here on the interweb and I’ll be damned if I am serving you beef tips. So there I was Sunday night just watching TV and wondering what to write about when boom. This piece of awesomeness fell into my lap.

WTF Weekly: Chris Paul Edition

By Jay Cox
PSDC Writer

Welcome to my weekly dose of WTF here on Project Shanks. With the NFL season over and football gone for the next six months (I know, I know it is truly sad time in America), your favorite writer gets to talk about other things. Things that will hopefully keep you amused or at the very least curb your boredom for five minutes while we all wait on football. This will be a weekly article dedicated to some WTF moment in sports or pop culture or just whatever I feel like ragging on.

This Week: Chris Paul

Okay, I am going to come to Paul’s defense here since it has been a dog pile on him by the media since Friday. If you are unfamiliar with this situation let me set the stage for you. The Clippers were trying to get the ball up the floor in a hurry. They inbounded and the baseline ref didn’t like the way it was done. She stopped play at which point Chris Paul asks her about it and then she T’s him up. I’m not here to discuss what is and what isn’t a technical, just on what happened in the aftermath. [Read more…]

NFL Week 20: Conference Champ Edition

By Jay Cox
PSDC Writer

Clearly there were only two games this week so I will do a small breakdown on both of the games and then I will give my Super Bowl breakdown. Since there will be literally not a soul in America that won’t be watching the game (coupled with the fact I will most likely be a bit sideways during the game) the last article of the season will be probably more based around commercials and people watching than the actual game. For that reason, this will be my best guess at how the game will breakdown.

Green Bay vs Seattle

brandon-bostick

Holy mother of pearl what a game. For 54 minutes this was Green Bay’s game. Then the magic that is Seattle came alive. Last week I wrote that I would take the non-Super Bowl repeat appearance trend over the Seattle is awesome at home trend. That was not smart. Seattle just can not be beat at home in the playoffs. For them to get an onside kick, then score and then get that prayer of a two-point conversion you knew they were not going to lose in OT. I am no Seahawks fan but I will give credit where credit is due. Hell of job, Seattle, Hell of a job. [Read more…]

NFL Week 19: Divisional Round Edition

By Jay Cox
PSDC Writer

Well, here we are a week away from knowing who will play in the Super Bowl. This weekend, we narrowed it down to four teams. Let’s discuss and make corny jokes at this week’s action.

Ravens vs Patriots

tom-brady-beats-broncos

Like I said last week when it comes time for the playoffs Flacco is a machine. He threw for 292 yards and four touchdowns. However when you are playing Tom Brady at home in the playoffs, you can never have a big enough lead or play well enough. Twice the Patriots were down 14 and came back to tie it. The Patriots scored with five minutes left to take the lead and then an interception sealed the deal. Now the Patriots will host the…Colts? Yes, the Colts this weekend. [Read more…]

NFL Week 18: Wild Card Edition

By Jay Cox
PSDC Writer

Last week I went 3-for-4 in my wild card picks. It wasn’t that hard…just take the home teams, unless you are Pittsburgh. C’mon Steelers get your life together. You get a home field wild card in division match up and lay down? As you are aware there were only four games this weekend so let’s break them down.

Cardinals at Panthers

It was wet and cold in Charlotte Saturday but that did not stop the Panthers offense. You just had that feeling that whatever team had to travel to the below .500 NFC South champ would lose. Football just works like that sometimes. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they had this task and poetically, they lost. Jonathan Stewart went for 122 yards breaking the 100-yard mark for only the third time this season and Cam must have had a whole bottle of Camy-Cam juice. He threw for 198 and two touchdowns. Arizona had only 77 yards of offense and got their points off of a short field twice. I do feel bad for Arizona, yes injuries are part of football but to lose two QBs that way is hard to overcome. Next up for the Panthers…they put their big boy undies on and head west to Seattle. [Read more…]

Well here we are, at the end of the line for 20 teams and the beginning of misery for 11 others. There were several win and you are in scenarios this week. In my opinion, not only is this the best entertainment but it also is the definition of sport. No judges, no committees and no biased or unbiased opinions. It is just you and the will to win. Win or sped the rest of the offseason wondering why you couldn’t and what went wrong. I love it so let’s break down a few games. [Read more…]

NFL Week 16: The End is Near Edition

By Jay Cox
PSDC Writer

Well we have made it to Week 16. Crazy how fast we have gotten here. Happy Christmas or Kwanza or Hanukkah or whatever you and yours celebrate. If I missed a holiday in there, I am sorry but that just means whatever you believe in just is not marketing well enough. Regardless, this article is for all so buckle up and let’s go (unless you team is in the boat with mine then get your hankies out cause our season is officially over).

tom-brady

We are skipping Thursday because that was a bad game between two teams and I refuse to call that NFL action

Saturday Action

I love college but I love, love, love some NFL on Saturday. We had the Eagles vs Redskins and Chargers vs 49ers. First up in some NFC East action the Eagles successfully eliminated themselves from the playoffs by losing to the Redskins. Do not ask me how losing to a 3-10 team when you have to win to stay alive is even possible. Here’s the thing Coach Kelly, this ain’t Oregon anymore Toto. You can’t get down 10 and just expect to comeback and win in the NFL. You probably know by now I am a Saints fan so all I can say is I feel ya Eagles, I feel ya. [Read more…]

NFL Week 15: Johnny Failure Edition

Here we are, done with Week 15 and barreling toward the playoffs. There was some good action and not some not so good action so without further ado let’s discuss.

Field Goal Fest in St. Louis

The Cards keep finding ways to win. First it was without Palmer, then it was without Fitzgerald and now it was without a TD. That sentence is probably taking away the great defensive performance but the Rams have more than once laid an egg on offense. Either way the Cards have started hot and have kept it rolling when most of us doubted. The win keeps the Cards in first in the NFC West and with the Packers blunder it puts them back at the top of the NFC. [Read more…]

NFL Week 14: Fantasy Playoffs Edition

Congrats to all of you that made your playoffs. I am truly happy for you. It can be hard to detect sarcasm in written text but that last sentence I was laying it on thicker than roll on Valtrex at a Miley concert. I missed the playoffs in all my leagues. Which is actually pretty impressive in itself. Today, we will tackle a few divisions all at one time rather than individual game breakdowns. We are coming down the stretch and many teams will be playing each other now and in the coming weeks. Enough talky, talky let’s move to the action.

Cowboys

C’mon Boys fans don’t lie. You were watching the beginning of that fourth quarter with your hands over your eyes. A scene that looked all to familiar in recent years. The Cowboys are up and then inexplicably the other team (Bears in this case) come storming back and Dallas can not get out of their own way enough to hold on. Congrats, today the story was different. Probably shouldn’t have given up 21 fourth quarter points to a much inferior team but they played well enough to win it down the stretch. Still tied with the Eagles for the division but the Eagles hold the tie breaker for now. [Read more…]

NFL Week 13: Johnny Touchdown Edition!

Finally!!

It took us 13 weeks to get here but finally the most electrifying college player had some legitimate playing time and scored. Sure the Browns lost and the Bills won the game but man that run was awesome. If you aren’t’ a fan of watching Manziel play, you should not watch football. The guy is compelling! You may love him or hate him but you want to watch him. Maybe he plays moving forward and maybe he doesn’t but can you imagine a playoff run with Johnny? It’d be as more or more popular than the Tebow season. The Bills win keeps them in touch in the AFC East and the Browns loss doesn’t hurt them that much since the almost entire AFC North Stumbled on Sunday. [Read more…]
