Project Shanks Monday Night Movie: Chef (2014)

Rating: **** 1/2 (out of 5)

The Monday Night Movie is back after a long, mostly unplanned hiatus, but things have calmed down in life for me to get back to this column. And since it is Labor Day, I could have totally done something on the nose, like review Jason Reitman’s film Labor Day, but that would be totes obvious, as the kids might say. (Don’t worry. I hate me for that sentence too.) And because I also can’t think of any Labor Day themed horror movies (because doing a Google search was out of the question), I am doing what I usually do every week – picking something completely at random! This week I am taking a look at the 2014 comedy from writer/director/actor Jon Favreau, Chef. [Read more…]

One Person’s Iron Man Marathon

By Thornton Mountford

When I told a couple of my friends that I had booked my Saturday because I was going to have an Iron Man Marathon, both of them looked at me with the utmost incredulous looks, laughed and then finally said… “Really??”

“Yes. And it’s going to be awesome.” I responded completely unaware of why they were so incredulous and instead just assuming they were judging me for making plans in advance for an Iron Man Marathon.

Then one of my friends said, “Umm… isn’t that… not really your thing?” And that’s when it dawned on me. For some reason these friends of mine, that know me well enough to laugh at the thought of me running and Ironman marathon/triathalon/whateveritiscalled actually thought that my Iron Man Marathon plans were Ironman marathon plans. I don’t think they saw the space in between Iron and Man when they heard me say it.

So, I did a one man marathon (although my roommate joined in for Iron Man 2 and The Avengers, and I saw Iron Man 3 with a friend of mine but still only one man pulled off the full marathon last Saturday and that man was This Guy), and now you get to read about how it went down in a very loose timeline format. Hooray!

May 3 (8 DBIMM [Days Before Iron Man Marathon]):

This is when I first realized, “Hey! The new Iron Man movie is coming out really soon. And I want to see it. And well…if that doesn’t sound like the perfect excuse to watch all of the prior Iron Man movies (plus The Avengers!) then I don’t know what is.” Later that evening I make tentative plans with my friend Tim to see Iron Man 3, and then I tell him that I want to do a marathon and watch Iron Man 1 and then 2 then The Avengers and then go see 3. He laughs. I then proceed to watch the Celtics lose to the Knicks and cry a bit. [Read more…]

PSDC Movie Review: Iron Man 3

Rating: **** (out of 5)

Iron Man is back and we are officially in the summer movie season. And I could not be any more excited. Seriously.

Not gonna lie. I was nervous how this film would go after the expectations shattering event that was The Avengers. In fact, I worried it might suck. I was pleasantly surprised that it not only didn’t suck but exceeded my expectations.

Iron Man 3 finds Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in distress after the events of The Avengers. He is now an insomniac obsessed with building an endless series of Iron Man suits with different functions to prepare for any possible new threat. His company is now being run by his girlfriend Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), who has also moved in with Tony and adding more stress to his life, and he has made former bodyguard Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) head of security for Stark Industries, to the utter chagrin of everyone else who works at Stark Industries.
