If You Write It, They Will Read It

I love baseball and I love movies. So obviously, I love movies that are about baseball. From “If you build it, he will come” in Field of Dreams to Crash Davis hitting dingers in Bull Durham to the Wild Thing throwing heat in Major League, I can’t get enough of movies about America’s pastime.

If I had to pick my all-time favorite, I would have to say it’s The Natural with Robert Redford. The mythical tale of “the best to ever play the game” Roy Hobbs. Roy Hobbs, what a great name. As we all know, Hobbs’s career gets sidetracked on his way to play pro baseball and it takes years for him to make it to the majors. When he finally gets his chance, he shows the baseball world what he can do and it is awesome. He’s way past his prime but he makes the best of his last chance to play the game he loves so much. It’s a beautiful sports fairy tale. [Read more…]

His Name Is Ru$$ell, Last Name Wil$on

There seems to be a new report just about everyday about Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson’s contract situation. It is all very boring to me and I’m a lifelong Seahawks fan. I know that’s what we do now with the internet and social media overkilling everything but this is getting ridiculous. Sports talk radio just makes it worse especially since it is the offseason and there is little else to talk about NFL-wise.

Does Russell Wilson deserve $20 million per year? Does he deserve to be the highest paid quarterback in the entire league? I have no idea and the truth is I really don’t care. Some moron radio caller from Wisconsin isn’t going to make me care either. [Read more…]

A Kiss Is Just A Kiss…Most Of The Time

I had an early appointment this morning so I found myself listening to talk radio in my car before I had a chance to scan the daily news on the internet. And when I say news I am being very generous and a lot sarcastic.

I scanned my preset radio stations and tried not to make a mess on my clean shirt while I finished my breakfast burrito. I quickly found out there was one story that everyone was talking about. Even the sports shows were discussing it which really confused me.

Apparently 56-year-old Madonna had gone on stage at Coachella and kissed the 28-year-old singer Drake. The reports were that the much younger Drake did not enjoy this at all. Some exact quotes that were used were “Madonna stunned Drake by kissing him on stage during his set at Coachella, much to the rapper’s apparent disgust” and “then she surprised him with a passionate smooch, much to his apparent horror.” Horror? Horror? OK I wasn’t really interested in this story but horror? Oh, Ive got to see this I thought to myself. [Read more…]

Extra Points Are As Exciting As Free Throws

Ever since the NFL owners meetings ended, there has been all kinds of talk about changing the current extra point rules. I am not usually one for change for the sake of change but here are some ideas of how to make the boring extra point system we have now, more exciting.

extra-point-nfl

You might call my ideas crazy but this is the NFL we’re talking about.

There will no longer be any extra point kicks. It is harder to miss a kick from the two-yard line than it is to make one. All extra points will have to be either a run or a pass. Rob Gronkowski will be ineligible for all extra point tries out of fairness to the other teams. [Read more…]

5 Things We Learned from the Academy Awards

Most Oscar shows are pretty much exactly the same except for the details. Even though the entire tired format needs a massive makeover, there are still things we can lean from each show.

1. John Travolta is extremely creepy - I’m old enough to remember when Vinnie Barbarino was the coolest guy on TV and Tony Manero was the coolest guy at the movies but those days are long gone. After his awkward kissing of Scarlett Johansson on the red carpet and his constant touching of Idina Menzel, he has officially become that creepy uncle who gets too close to you when he talks and hugs you just a little too tight and too long. And I am not even mentioning the choker or the guy-liner that he wore. Oh wait, I just did.

2. Doogie Howser is all grown up - Neil Patrick Harris or NPH as the kids like to say, is really a multi-talented performer. He really is perfect for the Oscar hosting gig. It seems effortless for him to switch between singing and dancing and joke telling. He doesn’t take himself too seriously and he didn’t shy away from making fun of Hollywood legends like Clint Eastwood and Robert Duvall. I could have however, done without his prediction bit which took up way too much time. [Read more…]

Super Bowl Betting: A Little Bit of History Repeating Itself

By Troy Gabaldon

Before I begin I want to have full disclosure and let you know that I am a Seahawks fan. I am also a sports bettor but I never bet on or against any of my favorite teams. That doesn’t mean that I don’t still handicap games that my teams are playing in, especially when they are playing in the biggest game of the year. Not to mention the biggest gambling game of the year.

I keep reading and hearing that Vegas has made the Patriots slight favorites over the Seahawks. This is a very confusing and unclear statement. Does that mean that the odds-makers have made the Patriots slight favorites or that the betting public has made them slight favorites? Two very different things. [Read more…]
