Our friends down in San Antonio have barely begun sobering up from their title celebration, the NBA rookie draft is on deck for this Thursday, NBA free agency begins next Tuesday and the NBA world is awash with chaos and speculation. The bank of fog rolling across the NBA landscape is so thick several Vegas books have pulled all future odds on NBA championships. Things are very unsettled right now. The word frenzy has popped up. Over the next few days leading up to the draft and the free agency mayhem that follows the next week, expect the stories and speculation about who is going where to grow exponentially. While the biggest stories will focus will be on Carmelo Anthony and Miami’s Big Three, numerous other players may be on the market with the potential to change the playoff picture of the NBA. To keep track of everything in the midst of this madness, first we must identify the players. Here is a look at some of the biggest names likely to draw attention as free agency looms. Let’s start with the champs. [Read more…]

Western Conference Finals Game 4 Recap: San Antonio Spurs vs Memphis Grizzlies

By Robbie Marbury
PSDC Big Man

Last night, the San Antonio Spurs ended the season of the Memphis Grizzlies after a 93-86 victory in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals. The Spurs not only won the series, but they swept the Grizzlies and made the league’s second-best defense look lost from the jump. This series proved what some already knew: grit and grind will not overcome superior talent and coaching.

Gregg Popovich is taking the Spurs to their fifth NBA Finals appearance, a mere 13 years apart from the first time he went to the finals with Tim Duncan. After the game, you heard nothing but words of respect and admiration coming out of the Grizzlies coaches, players and execs mouths about the Spurs, and that’s because the Spurs are a classy organization, that knows how to beat the snot out of teams. Western Conference Finals Game 3 Recap: San Antonio Spurs vs Memphis Grizzlies

By Robbie Marbury
PSDC Big Man

Saturday night the Memphis Grizzlies hosted the San Antonio Spurs for Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. The Spurs held a 2-0 lead, mainly because they are the Spurs and they are good, but this game was at the FedEx Forum, or The Grindhouse if you ask any Memphian. Coming in the Grizzlies are 5-0 in this building during these playoffs, and have one lose there since Feb. 6. If the Grizzlies were going to get back in this series, this is the game that would happen.

The first quarter of Game 3 could not have gone better for the Memphis Grizzlies, it’s the rest of the game that did not go their way. Memphis forced the Spurs into seven turnovers in the first quarter and led 29-13 at the end of the quarter. Memphis was defending the pick-and-roll, they were jumping out on shooters and they were making their shots. [Read more…]

Western Conference Finals Game 2 Recap: Memphis Grizzlies vs San Antonio Spurs

Last night the San Antonio Spurs took a 2-0 lead over the Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference Finals.  The result was the same as in game one, and heading into the fourth quarter it looked as if the Spurs were going to pull off another rout over the Grizzlies.  But, thanks to the Grizzlies stifling defense, and a phantom head injury by Tony Allen, Memphis forced the game into overtime.

Western Conference Finals Game 1 Recap: Memphis Grizzlies vs San Antonio Spurs

By Robbie Marbury
PSDC Big Man

On Sunday afternoon in San Antonio, TX, the Memphis Grizzlies were victims of a good, old-fashioned butt-whoopin’, at least that’s what we call it where I’m from. San Antonio beat Memphis in every facet of the game. Memphis led 2-0, then Kawhi Leonard splashed in a three and the Spurs never looked back. San Antonio beat the Grizzlies every second of the game after the 0-2 deficit until the final buzzer sounded with the final score of 105-83.

There are many reasons as to why the Spurs beat the Grizzlies so handily, but the two biggest reasons were Zach Randolph and a crap-ton of three’s. [Read more…]

Western Conference Finalist Memphis Grizzlies: We Grind Here

By Robbie Marbury
PSDC Big Man

For the first time in team history, the Memphis Grizzlies are in the Western Conference Finals. Yeah, those Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies that started in Vancouver. The ones that tried to build a franchise around Bryant Reeves and then Pau Gasol.  The ones who wasted lottery picks on Hasheem Thabeet and Xavier Henry. Yes, those Grizzlies. Those Grizzlies are in the Western Conference Finals. (Just to let you know, the over/under on how many times I mention “Memphis Grizzlies in the Western Conference Finals” is set at 10 for this article. Psst, take the over.) The Grizzlies have been so bad in the draft that only one player on the team was drafted by the Grizzlies, Mike Conley. Darrell Arthur was traded for on draft night, so if you want to include him, then that is two players. [Read more…]

I don’t know about the rest of the world, but when the Grizlies/Thunder game stared I can tell you right now that Memphians were either at church, sleeping one off from the night before on Beale Street or already celebrating Cinco de Mayo. Noon tips always suck. Let’s take a look at what Twitter said happened in the first game between Memphis and Oklahoma City.

NBA Playoffs Preview: Clippers vs Grizzlies

By Robbie Marbury

The 2013 NBA playoffs start this weekend, and like almost every other NBA season the first-round matchups in this year’s NBA playoffs are dull. This season has a couple of intriguing series, like Boston Celtics versus New York Knicks or Los Angeles Lakers versus San Antonio Spurs, but the main event to this year’s first round will begin Saturday night when the Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Lakers square off.

Let the Bloodbath Begin

I call this a main event not only because the Clippers/Grizzlies series is expected to be the most evenly matched in the first-round, but also because these two teams are going to turn this series into an old-school, beat’em up, knockdown, drag-out, brawl. And, there might literally be some fighting. No joke, there will at least be a couple of escalated shoving matches. These two teams had round one of this battle during last year’s Western Conference Playoffs. This year is going to be round two of what is beginning to be one of the best rivalries in the NBA. One week into the 2012-2013 NBA season and we have already written off the Los Angeles Lakers as title contenders, deemed Mike Brown the first coach to be fired, named James Harden the MVP and already handed the NBA Championship to the Miami Heat.  Just like that.  The season might as well be over.
